Proud intellectual snobbery about cartoon animals.

I've heard mixed reactions about Donkey Kong Country. Most say that it's a very good game, but there are reports of control and clipping issues. I've yet to play it, so I'll try to stay away from the control aspect.

The graphics are nothing short of incredible for the dinky 8-bit system. I'm amazed Rare was able to pull this off without graphical slowdown. There's dithering everywhere to get the most out of 56 colors, which I can only imagine strains the Game Boy Color. All-in-all, the graphics are superb, and I can't see how this will ever be topped as far as GBC is concerned.

I don't know about the sound effects, but the MP3s Ben gave us are excellent ports of the SNES version, considering Game Boy Color's almost nonexistant sound hardware. I'm sure the beeps, blips, and screeches will be taken directly from the DKL series, but there's really nothing wrong with that. I just want Kremlantis to return some day.

I've only got one main gripe with Donkey Kong Country, and that's the fact that you only turn into animal buddies rather than ride them. You rode them in Donkey Kong Land, and it was on the original Game Boy. Oh well, I suppose it's not that big of a deal. Riding on the animals has always just seemed more dynamic than turning into them.

All in all, I'm looking forward to this game, but not as much as you might expect, because I've already memorised the majority of it. All things considered, though, it should be a great game, and one that a DKC novice definitely needs to pick up.
