Slush's Donkey Kong Country Impressions
Well, Donkey Kong Country is coming out. Wait, it's already out you say? No, I mean for Game Boy Color. So what do I think of it without having played it yet? Guess I should fill up a few paragraphs worth too, eh? Man, this will be difficult.
Well. The game looks pretty damn good. Not as good as the original DKC, of course. It's probably the prettiest GBC game I've ever seen, and you have to give it to Rare for attempting to squeeze their mammoth introduction in superstardom into such a small package. The detail far surpasses the DKL series too. While I'm not sure why they won't let you ride the animal buddies like in the original DKC (you turn into them in this game, even though you could ride them in the original DKL), it shouldn't be such a big deal that it will take away from the fun factor.
From what I've heard, play control is about the same as it was for the original DKC, except with less buttons. It'll probably just be like a DKL game. And since I haven't even played it yet, why am I commenting on it? Damn, I'm just trying to fill up space now.
The biggest attraction for those of us who have already bought, played, and loved DKC dearly are the new bonus games and level(s). Yes, Rare placed bonus games situated on those small islands from DK64, and even put it one or two new levels. Of course, there are cosmetic changes to the worlds and levels in some areas too, so it's not like this is just going to be the same old DKC with crappier sound and graphics.
What else is there to talk about? Why, storyline! From what I've seen, the storyline is exactly the same as the orignal. Fair enough, but it should be noted that it doesn't mean it takes place six years ago. No, it will be an all new adventure continuity wise, just another go around with the original plot and levels. Hey, it's not just a Donkey Kong problem. Mario has had that problem for fifteen years. Oh, and what else will make this game so great? WINKY! WINKY RETURNS IN A NON-MUSEUM ROLE! I'M TYPING IN ALL CAPS BECAUSE WINKY IS A SPECIAL PERSON. IN HONOR OF WINKY, I'M GOING TO BE TYPING IN ALL CAPS FOR THE REST OF THE EDITOR IMPRESSIONS.
