Chiphead's Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour First Impressions

Time Played: About two and a half hours

I have to admit, when I first heard about a GameCube version of Mario Golf, I was really skeptical. Didn't we already have a perfectly fine Mario Golf for N64? What more was there to add. I was about to be proven wrong.

After a wacky FMV intro, I go to the character select screen. That would make sense, wouldn't it? The roster has changed considerably. All the unknowns from the N64 Mario Golf are gone, not to mention Baby Mario. Diddy Kong is a nice surprise. No notable additions otherwise, unless you're an obsessed fan of Waluigi, Koopa Troopa, Daisy, or Birdo. It should be noted that all the characters available at the start are also playable in the single-player mode, so you won't have to go through a million matches to play as the title character, nor do you have to beat Ring Shot mode to play that gorilla whose name escapes me at the moment. Also, the characters are balanced better, so Donkey Kong's drive is no longer 60 yards more than Yoshi's.

Visually, Toadstool Tour does not disappoint, especially if you're used to the N64 version. The character models look fantastic, and the courses look great as well. You can even see individual blades of grass in the rough. Voice acting is well-done too. Toad's "Baby Gonzo" voice is starting to grow on me, and Wario can shout such "cheers" as "Good luck... to me! Hahahahaha!" Even better is that they're FINALLY using DK64 voice samples for Donkey and Diddy.

Overall, Mario Golf is a great game. I wish I could say the same about Home Improvement for Super Nintendo. You know why I can't? Because I've never played it. Maybe one of these days I'll find a copy at FuncoLand or something and find some DKU connections and write some first impressions, but now isn't the time. Why? Because I don't care.
