Sparky's First Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour Impressions

Time Played: Around 3 hours

I stood there in Wal-Mart for at least 10 minutes. Was I really going to spend all of my remaining funds on a golf game? There were plenty of things to buy that I knew would be good. Game Boy Player springs to mind, as does DKC GBA. Everybody said the game was fun, but how do you make golf interesting? After 3 hours of playing, I still can't answer that question.

Maybe its the controls. When I first waded through the half-hour of contol demos, I was overwhelmed. How was anybody supposed to remember all the different buttons and situations? Against all odds, they became second nature almost instantly. It only took me three games to go from a 32+ to a 3+. They're really fun to use, for some reason. Maybe its that the swing controls operate like the Cyclone game down at the arcade. The one whose ass I kick on a regular basis. My one major problem is that it can sometimes be hard to see the hole, whilst putting. Also, manual mode is twice as fun as auto mode, and its not much harder at all. There's no real point for auto to even exist.

Maybe its the characters. Stamos knows that Diddy's been waiting for ages to get his furry hide into a cameo game. Diddy, in fact, all the characters are nicely done and true to their roots. They all feel like themselves, not just a bunch of stock faces put into a game to raise sales. It shows in the opening scene, where all of the characters just sort-of show up for golf at the same time. They also have hilarious animations for their birdies and bogeys and whatnot. One of my favorites is where Diddy spazes out and ends up hovering in the air, and his thumbs up for making par han't yet failed to crack me up. Classic.

Maybe its the music. No, wait...

Its probably just the overall atmosphere. Everything is bright, cheery, and fun, but not in the disgusting way. Overall, its a mildly addicting game that pulls its weight. Its been worth the purchase price so far. Only time will tell if it stays that way.
