Chad's First Mario Party 2 Impressions

Time Played: 1 hour, 12 minutes

Well, I wasn't expecting too much out of this game when I got it. I walked into Toys R Us, picked up the game, and with a grin, walked out. It was nothing compared to my hyperventalating DK64 purchase, and I think I heard the casheir breathe a sigh of relief as I left. Anyway, when I got home with the game, I opened it up, tossed the manual aside, and flicked on the game. The identical logo screens for Nintendo, HAL, etc. flashed up, and I had already thought I was simply playing Mario Party. You should have seen my face when the story started...

I'll say this right now: If you want the game to remain spoiler free, don't read these first impressions. I shall start off with the overall feel to the game. It seems like a basically souped-up Mario Party. I find myself hoping that Ill get a new minigame after everyone takes their turn. It's exciting! I don't remember having this level of excitement with Mario Party, probably because I didn't know what to expect. The game is very cheerful, but it's mysterious in a way. Overall, the feel is an improvement to the overly one-dimensional Mario Party.

The graphics are incredible. Well, the 3D models need anti-aliasing BADLY, but the background rendered stuff is incredible. The story is told through a play, and the stuff in the background is made to look like props, and it's very convincing. You want to reach out and grab it. The minigames are a sight to see. Very nice. Character animations are MUCH more varied. They move smoothly, and interact well, especially in the opening cinema scene. This was one of the few times that N64 slapstick humor made me laugh. Overall, great rendered graphics, but the polygonal stuff could use some work.

Sound is about average. Nothing more than one would expect, really. A Mario Party improvement, but not spectacular. The music is very theme-setting. In the words of Fonzie, "Aaayyy!"

Overall, this game is worth a rent, then a buy. If you're a hardcore DKU gamer, or loved the original Mario Party, go for it! I love it. I'm on Turn 14 of a 20-turn Pirate Land game with 64 coins and 1 star. AND I WANT TO KEEP PLAYING!!! Pardon me, as I run back to the Nintendo giggling insanely. YEE HEE HEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!
