Slush's First Mario Party 2 Impressions
Time Played: 1 hour, 3 minutes
Well, I finally walked into my local Wal-Mart today and slapped for 49.99 for Mario Party 2. Now, I loved the first MP. It's just that I was so happy after I beat it, because it could get frustrating sometimes. So I was a little leery about this game, just because I didn't want to go through the frustration of things like Tug 'O War or Crane Game again. Still, I didn't want to pass judgement until I played it.
So when I got home I pulled the game and instructions out of the box. I read the instructions for awhile, and then decided to just give the game a test run (as I usually wait to start playing seriously a day or two after my purchase). I noticed the same logos came up from Mario Party. Then the story started. I liked the unique way of telling the story in an abstract way, and it did make me like the story a lot better than I did before (in fact I liked the way they brought that whole "superstar" gibberish back into play). Then the title screen popped up and I was IMPRESSED. When Mario Party started it just had a white background with the characters staring at you. This new title screen was colorful and mystical. I liked it. The "map screen" follows the same "through the eyes of the character" approach that MP did, but this time you're in the "Mario Land" gate room. I noticed they let you hear the soundtrack and effects right off the bat this time, which was kind of them. Professor Fungi, huh? I miss Fun Gus, but oh well. It's also very cool how you run through the warp pipes horizontal now, and how there is a warp pipe to each board instead of the single Transdimensional Warp Pipe.
As Chad said, the graphics are pretty good. The characters do look a little...choppy....like (I can't speak tech like Chad) but the backgrounds are what really shine. Bright, colorful, and full of fun. Even the mini-game explanation screen with Toad is a bright bubbleliscious masterpiece of fruity flavor. And Shy Guy Says (Cap'n Shy Guy as an archer! Hah!) has one of the coolest backdrops ever.
I love the music in this game. While it's not Rare quality, it is more mystical (that word is key to describing the feel of this game). I've only played Pirate Land so far (I don't want to spoil the other boards until I seriously try and beat this game) but from what I've heard the music is a step up from Mario Party.
If you loved the original Mario Party, this game will knock your rocks off. If you just liked it, then you'll probably love this. If you hated MP, then you may just like this. If you despised it, then you'll hate MP2. I bought this game before rented it, but then I have a blind faith when it comes to the DKU....which has always worked out before, and it appears it's worked again.
