Slush's Mario Party 2 Impressions

The original Mario Party had a ton of features and stuff to do, so it kept me occupied for a long time. This game looks to be packed to the gills with even more stuff. I might as well say goodbye to my social life now, huh? Let me take a closer look at what's in this game before I judge it though:

While the graphics aren't on DK64's level, they are an improvement over the original MP. From the movies and screenshots I've seen, some minigames look more graphically enhanced than others (again, like the original). Sound seems to be the same cheery Nintendo-esque tunes we're all used to in the cameo games by now. Again, the sound isn't the Rare standard but it will do. As for play control, I can't judge that until I get the game, can I? However, the play control IS improved from the first (no more stick damaging twirling games, which is good because I still have the scar of a blister on my right hand that I call my Mario Party Badge Of Honor).

The same character selection is the same (six characters including DK), which kind of dissapoints me. I was hoping they would throw in a few more characters to spice things up (why can't we have Diddy in a cameo game for a change...). I shouldn't botch though, because we still have DK and that's more important in the long run than having Cap'n Shyguy as a playable character. However, if I had to pinpoint a large minus on this game before it comes out, then I would have to say it would be "no new characters."

The levels or boards look just a varied as the original game, but this time the boards don't represent a particular playable character. I think my personal favorites will be Pirate Land and Mystery Land (where alien beings can "probe" our heroes). It appears more thought has gone into the boards this time, because the environments look to be much more fun. This packs an extra punch that makes you want to go out and buy the game right away (if you're not already a hardcore DKU player).

I would have to say that this game looks great. I do feel bad for it, becuase it has to follow DK64 in the DKU chain of releases, and that may make it seem like a dissapointment in comparison. Of course, the original Mario Party had to follow Banjo-Kazooie and it turned out pretty good. Plus there's the fact that the original Mario Party is important to the series because it introduced very valuable items to DK mythology....golden bananas.

If you're a DKU fanatic, BUY THIS GAME. If you're just a casual gamer, at least rent it and see if you want it. Give it a try, because it can be a blast no matter how many players are at the helm. Plus, you need something to tide you over until Banjo-Tooie is released.
