Chad's Mario Tennis Impressions
Mario Tennis. Everybody seems to be in love with this title. I don't doubt that it's incredible, but having not played it as Slush has (damned Wal-Mart demo booth was broken), I won't have the same enthusiasm for it. But I will have an equal (if not higher) curiosity level. Because I just don't get it.
Mario Golf was fun. In fact, I consider Mario Golf to be more fun than Mario's Tennis on Virtual Boy. All you did on that game was run left and right according to where the ball went. Granted it's spiced up with pretty graphics now, but I don't understand what the fuss is all about. I suppose it's one of those things you just have to play. Getting back to graphics, Camelot has drastically improved the Mario Golf graphics (especially the character models... Donkey no longer has cubes for arms). I love all the explosion-type effects they put in, and at least in the screenshots it looks to be a right pretty game. Also they've got those realistic shadows that Rare has just recently dove into.
As for sound, I have no idea what the game sounds like, but in Slush's imps he said the Donkey Kong "carburetor voice" is returning. While I'll always prefer the "real" gorilla sounds Rare gives him, I'm starting to warm up to the carburetor voice. I just wish it was a bit easier to spell what he says. Something a bit like "Oo-eh-eh-ehuh, oo-eh-eh-ehuh" I would imagine.
If you take into consideration that about ten people in existence (including Slush and myself) own a Virtual Boy, and maybe half of those (including Slush and myself) own Mario's Tennis, then the game isn't exactly widespread. This is the only thing that can help me get a grasp on what the game plays like, and it's far from the ravings Mario Tennis is getting, from fans and professional reviewers alike. So I'm definitely interested in seeing how it plays.
Okay, so maybe I'm not raving like everybody else is, but that, as stated numerous times, is because I haven't played the game yet, and apparently you have to play it to see why the game just "clicks". So I'm really looking forward to whenever I'll be able to get my hands on a copy. It comes out today, but I'm broke except for a $107 store credit to Comp USA, who says they haven't even ordered them yet. Damned faulty S-Video switch.
