Behonkiss's Mario Golf: Toadstool Tour Review

Sweet Zombie Jesus. After the shitty graphics of the first Mario Golf, this definitely threw me for a loop. First off, this is the best each character has looked on GCN so far(Some may argue that they looked better in SSBM, but these are truer to their character designs, especially DK.), and their animations just plain MADE this game for me. They are stuffed with personality more than ever before. And the opening FMV? It's everything Mario Sunshine's crappy cinema scenes wished they could be. The courses are also a huge step up from the N64 Mario Golf, with settings that feel so much more fitting for a Mario game. Maybe Nintendo can take some lessons from Camelot's guys.

The music is hardly stand-out, but a golf title shouldn't have its music focused on. However, it is soothing, well put-together, and fitting for each course, so it gets the job done. And the voices? All the Mario characters sound totally spot-on. Bowser's voice has improved radically, as he no longer sounds like Kuwabara. Peach is still an annoying bitch, but that's hardly new.(She needs to be more like she is in the RPGs.)Daisy is probably the biggest improvement; her new voice sounds a lot more natural and realistic, and has some great quotes. It gives her so much character and actually makes her kind of cute. And Donkey and Diddy? They have their DK64 voices back in full force. I LOVE YOU, CAMELOT.

And here's where I was really surprised. I expected a confusing layout with the GCN controller, but instead, after going through the tutorials, I had the hang of it in 5 minutes. And it handles even easier than the original! Since I must put the company's name once per paragraph, here we go: Good job, Camelot.

Well, OK, here's where we have the big problem. Aside from souped-up graphics and some new characters, there's not really anything in Toadstool Tour that wasn't done before. Sure, there's the Chain Chomps and warp pipes, but what about new modes? Where's the mini golf and slot mode? There are actually some things taken away from the original, in this case. NOT COOL, CAMELOT.

Despite the harshness of the above section, don't be fooled. This game is a joy to play, and this comes from someone who didn't even like the previous Mario sports games. The problems from before have been fixed, and everything seems to click together and flow more naturally, along with the fact that the game feels more like a Mario and DKU title(DIDDYDIDDYDIDDY). I can say that this is the best cameo game since SSBM, and that I love you, Camelot. NOW GIVE US A FREAKIN' GCN GOLDEN SUN, DAMMIT.
