Chiphead's Mario Party 3 Review

The original Mario Party wasn't known for it's graphics. The character models were pretty crap, especially Donkey Kong. Two and a half years pass, a period of time during which Hudson could have improved the graphics. Did they want some consistancy or are they just lazy. My gut says the latter. Even the new characters don't look that great. The prerendered boards look okay, I guess, but other than that Mario Party 3 looks horribly dated.

Forgetable music with bad voice acting. Can someone explain to me why Charles Martinet, the guy who did Wario's voice in Mario Kart 64 and Wario Land 4, among other games, plays Mario in this game but not Wario? I don't get it at all.

If you can press A at the exact millisecond, you should be fine. Otherwise, the constant roulettes take away almost all traces of strategy. The mini-games, for the most part control well, which is good, since it's the only part of the game that requires skill. However, in the end they don't mean shit. The most annoying example of this is the Game Guy. When you land on his space you're forced to wager ALL your coins (even if you have 100 coins) on his mini-game. In one game, there are two treasure chests. If you pick the right one, your coins double but if you pick the wrong one you lose them all, and there's no way of telling which is which. Now how the hell is that fair? At least the mini-games control fine.

There are a few innovations in this otherwise rehashed title. Pity most of them suck. Let's see... two new characters: that guy from Mario Tennis, and Daisy, who has only appeared in one game since Super Mario Land in 1989. Then there's the duel maps. Basically you get a partner and try to attack your opponent. This sounds cool, but there's a big problem. Now each partner has advantages and disadvantages. For example, Whomp can defend you well, but he can't attack. Toad isn't very powerful, but he has a low salary. However, the way you choose your partner is - get ready for a shock - a roulette. So you have to rely on more of that blind luck Hudson loves. I've already bitched about the Game Guy. What else is there? Ah, yes, the wonderful new Story Mode, which is just the multiplayer mode with predetermined rules. What what what? 70 new mini-games? Sure, some of them are good, there's no old ones? Where's Bumper Balls or Hexagon Heat? I will give MP3 this: It tries to reduce the amount of watching the computer play. You can make the characters move faster on the board, and you can skip the computer's one-player mini-games, the latter being a long-overdue addition. However, the bad outweighs the good by far.

This game probably killed the DKU completionist in me. I have no plans on ever getting Mario Party 4 or 5. See, the first Mario Party was a fun, original, well-designed game. The second one improved upon it taking away all the crappy mini-games, throwing some fun new ones, and bringing back old favorites. But with this one the series just got old.
