Behonkiss' Banjo-Tooie Review

Tooie manages to keep B-K's jaw-droppin' graphics(One of the standard-setters for N64, as I said in my BFD review)and improve on them slightly. There is some slowdown, but it's not as noticable as some people think. *hwarf*IGN*hwarf* There are noticable improvements here are there, such as more character emotions for guys such as Mumbo, actual mouth movements in cinemas(No speech, unfortunately), and some nice floor reflections in levels. All without the Expansion Pak. Aaah, I love Rare's graphic designers. 9.0

The only thing that keeps this from getting a higher reason is that the garbled speech is still there. I want full speech, gosh-diddly-darnit! The garbling does work, though. The tone for each character really helps you figure out their personality, in subliminal ways I don't understand. Did I mention that the music is wonderfully orchestrated and unique and fitting for each level, and will stick in your head for days? Maybe I didn't need to.

So why'd this get a low rating? Simple, the Breegull Gun controls. While I was able to keep control of the birds' neck, the target aim is the only way to be really precise, and it moves way too skittish and fast. Heh, maybe that's why I don't like the controls for Rare's shooters. Other than that, the controls work just as good as BK, easy to remember and pulled off flawlessly. Kudos to everyone at Rare but the guys who developed the shooter scheme.

OK, so it's another platformer. Yet BT pulls the old formula off so well you'll barely notice. Rare did manage to put in some new twists, such as a better balance between playable characters than DK64, as each character has their own unique way of playing. Nicely done.

I think I'd give this game a higher rating, if not for the fact that BFD is the best N64 platformer, and that Game Cube will have even better platformers. Yet to not play this would be pretty stupid. It's a great addition to any Rare collection. Did I mention I love Rare?
