JetDog's Banjo-Tooie Review

Huzzah! Lots of textures and less fade-in is the path Rare took for B-T. The lighting effects and shadows are very realistic, and the motions of characters tend to be very amusing. The result is a polished, lively, cartoony look. However, I have some huge problems with the replayable cut-scenes, which feature nightmare framerates and blurriness that take big chunks away from the drama. Also, it doesn't quite feature the lovable simplicity of DKC 1's graphics. A small step down from DK64, I think.

Some nice cartoon noises are included, but not as goofy as DK64 (a bad thing for me). But the ridiculous, garbled sounds the characters utter more than make up for it! And although a few tunes lack in atmosphere, most are catchy and memorable. Dolby Surround is a sweet touch, too.

The attacks and egg access are not that intuitive, but they definitely work! The Breegull Blaster mode is not as good as Goldeneye and PD's conrol, as Banjo is a fast walker. Far worse problems often take place in midair, though, like trying to get the Jinjo in Wumba's Wigwam as the Bee, or the Jiggy at the top of Targitzan's Temple (I couldn't find the ramp leading up there at all!!) Aside from these, though, Banjo-Tooie handles well.

OK, now it's not so good! There's not as much collecting as in DK64, true, but it tries to emphasize on the backtracking and size now! The worlds are too huge to find a new area in less than 2 days of playing (almost), and the constant backtracking between worlds becomes extremely annoying and tedious. The minigames are mediocre efforts at fun, as well. DK64 and B-K made things far more exciting with the widely varied atmosphere, mood and enemies. B-K, however, cannot offer what its predecessor and "clone" do. However, one has to give the game credit for its wry, crazy sense of humor, so the rating gets boosted up three tenths!

Banjo-Tooie had a lot of potential, but it is not that much like B-K *or* DK64. Still, this game provides plenty of hours of enjoyment (that's not to say I rightfully beat it though!). If you have a good amount of tolerance, it's a surefire purchase.
