Slush's Super Smash Bros. Review

The graphics in Super Smash Bros. aren't anywhere near the level of Rareware's smooth polygons and the such, but they aren't terrible. The acutal levels (or arenas, whatever) look pretty good and I must give kudos to HAL for keeping each level true to the game they represent. They didn't make the Congo Jungle look totally different like they could of, and they made Yoshi's Island look like the storybook crap it was in Yoshi's Story. As far as the characters go, some look better than others. DK does look a tad misshapen in the head area, but they made him pretty accurate (including the backwards DK on the back of his tie).

Sound was great. They took the most recognizable music from each character's primary game which truly made this game nostalgic and fun. The Congo ("Kongo") Jungle music from DKC made a return, and the old Zelda music was back too (that's probably my favorite non-DKU videogame music). Voice selections stayed true to the characters, and much to Chad's delight they refrained from having DK use the carburator voice in this game (he just grunted a lot, like in DK64). I love that carburator voice though, but I like the grunting too. Those God-awful Pokemon had their voices taken straight from the cartoon show, which showed they cared about detail (at least since this game was released in Japan first, where the Poke-crisis was born). Great sound, even though most of it wasn't original (but once again, kudos to HAL for NOT having original music, which would have killed the atmosphere for this particular game).

Thankfully, this was not a button mashing, combo filled, pile of dog fecal butter like the Street Fighters, Mortal Kombats, and Tekkens are. This fighting game was more simplistic, and therefore more fun. I also love how HAL included some of DK's signature moves, like the overhand slap. I'll use the old cliche however. This game is easy to learn, but hard to master. You'll need to master it to beat wily veterans of the game in multi-player mode, but you'll only need to be somewhat good to beat Master Hand in Very Hard mode.

The mascot fighter isn't really TOTALLY original. Capcom has done it before, but the only chracters they have that people give a monkey turd about are Ryu, Honda, Blanka, Chun Li, and Mega Man (four of which are Street Fighters). Nintendo had the balls to do this game, which suprised me, but it has been a long time coming. It was great to see DK and Samus in a game for the first time (and it was great to see DK kick Link's pretty boy arse all the way back to Tiger Beat Land) and it was not so great to see DK and the Pokemon in a game together. But really...if DK and Pokemon had to be together, isn't it great that it was a FIGHTING game that brought them together. Die you bostards...yes, die.....

This game ROCKS. This would have to be king of the cameo games for the simple fact that nearly all the main stars in the Nintendo mythos make a "cameo." There's not much else to say that hasn't been said above. If you're a fan of Nintendo, BUY IT. If you're not a fan of fighting games (I'm not myself), still buy it, because it isn't your average fighting game. There's no blood (it's rated E you know), much to my dissapointment, so it's good clean family violent fun. Now if Rare would just make their own mascot fighting game. I'd like to whip those Jet Force Gemini brats and Joanna Dark into oblivion with the tag team of Tiptup and Lanky....wouldn't you?
