Fox McCloud's Biography
Species: Fox (doi)
In another part of the Milky Way Galaxy, in a dense cluster of planets called the Lylat System, events were taking place. Events that would rock the Donkey Kong Universe to it's core, and bring about the creation of, truly, our filthy hobby's very first hero. (loosely, anyway.)
Fox McCloud was born on Corneria, the central hub of the Lylat System. His father, James McCloud, was an well-renowned pilot and all-around war hero. He was also the chief rival of a scientist named Andross, who had been banished from the system some time ago and was now attempting to take it over from his outpost on Venom. On the advice of his copilot Pigma Dengar, James and his friend Peppy Hare boarded their fighters and sent off for Venom. Some time later, Peppy returned in a badly damaged Arwing with grave news: Pigma had led the team into a trap, and James had been killed. With this horrible realization in place, Peppy consoled the young Fox and told him that he should start the team over again. With Peppy, the hot-headed Falco Lombardi and the ever-annoying Slippy Toad at his side, Fox boarded his Arwing fighter and took the fight to Andross, scorching a path through the Lylat system to Venom, where Fox personally took on the demented ape. He emerged victorious, and Andross's lair was destroyed, taking the evil crone with it.
8 years passed, and the Starfox team had seen better days. With no sign of trouble in ages, Falco left the team for some solo venturing. Peppy and Slippy hung up their wings and concerned themselves with ground-based operations. Only Fox kept the spirit of the original team and his father alive, but even that was starting to wane. Something had to give, or the motely group was going to be put to rest for good.
That chance came rather unexpectedly. General Pepper buzzed in one day with an urgent assignment: Dinosaur Planet, a world on the outer rim of the system, was breaking apart at an alarming rate. Fearing the consequences this could have on the rest of the system, Pepper assigned the team to head over there and fix whatever was wrong: for a price, of course. The Great Fox sped off for the planet, and Fox quickly touched down, searching out the Queen EarthWalker and inquiring what was going on. According to the queen, the renegade Sharpclaw tribe had set in motion its plan for conquest, stealing the four Spellstones that held the planet together. After finding a strange staff strewn amongst the grasses and rescuing the Queen's son Tricky, Fox set out to stop the Sharpclaw leader General Scales and put the planet back together. This required him to seek out the Gatekeepers to open the pathways to each orbitting landmass; and after that, he had to fly his Arwing through multiple rings to open the Force Field to get in.
Things started getting a little more complicated soon after Fox dropped off the first Spellstone at the Volcano Force Point Temple. Fox and Tricky were confronted by a Krazoa Spirit - the spiritual beings who created and held Dinosaur Planet together. The Spirit entrusted Fox with the task of retrieving the scattered Krazoa Spirits and returning them to Krazoa Palace. After seeing that the Spirits were needed to not only keep the planet held together, but also to rescue the trapped female fox Krystal, Fox eagerly accepted the task and got to work: grabbing the Spellstones and Spirits as he went. Eventually, Fox retrieved and placed all 4 Spellstones, but that alone was not enough to keep the planet held together. Fox departed for the Walled City, determined to find the remaining Krazoa Spirits. After retrieving one and leaving Tricky behind with his father the King, Fox set off for the Palace, determined to end the madness once and for all. Fox recovered another Spirit in the temple and channelled both of them in, but there was still one left: and General Scales was in possession of it. The two faced off in the last Krazoa Shrine; or rather, they would have, if a strange voice had not commanded Scales to give up his Spirit. Fox returned the final spirit, but soon realized that he had been tricked: the Spirits were not being used to bring the planet back together or save Krystal; they were being channelled into one source: the mighty Krazoa God! After quickly saving Krystal from a nasty fall and returning her staff, Fox entered his Arwing and took off after the floating Krazoa head. High in Dinosaur Planet's orbit, the Krazoa God revealed himself: Andross, returned from the grave! A long and lengthy battle ensued, and Fox would have lost if not for the timely intervention of Falco, who had some Bombs ready in the wings. After taking a few too many plasma blasts to the head, Andross expelled the Krazoa Spirits and exploded brilliantly. The Spirits returned the orbitting rocks to their original place, restoring Dinosaur Planet. With Falco back on the team, more money in the pockets and a correspondence from Krystal, Fox and the gang set off for more adventure and money-making opportunities.
Fox's heroics caught the eye of another villian: the dimensional-hopping Master Hand decided to bring the fox anthro into his little tournaments, where he faced off against Donkey Kong, amongst others. When Master Hand struck again in 2001, Fox was once again pulled into the tournament: only this time, Falco was brought along for the ride.
Fox is well deserving of a place in the DKU annals, if only because he was blasting alien pigs into space dust while Donkey Kong was still learning self-control.
