Gregg Mayles posted some DK94 art Shigeru Miyamoto faxed to Rare during DKC's production:

So I haven't had time to pic up Mario Maker yet, so what's the verdict? From what it look slike, there's a fair bit of Arcade Era stuff, including FOREMAN SPIKE'S PLAYABLE DEBUT!!

Holy shit.

Did not see that coming.

Come to think of it, they've been pimping Wrecking Crew a bit lately, haven't they?

NES Remix, Smash, now this...

Hmm..

Well there was NES Remix, but yeah I'm not sure that counts.

In general though, between Spike showing up and Mario adopting his Wrecking Crew duds for the title, I'm tempted to group Mario Maker with the Wrecking Crew stuff on the site.

Turns out Hudson made its own version of Donkey Kong 3 (kinda like those weird sequels to Mario Bros. they did) for various Japanese home computer platforms. It's... interesting:

Holy. Fucking. Shit.

What. The. Fuck.

Okay!

So first off, that kanji tacked on to the title, 大逆襲, reads "Revenge", so this is officially a sequel, Donkey Kong 3 Revenge, and not a port.

Secondly, Stanley now has four fucking games! His empire grows!

Also, wtf aliens?! Aliens in a Donkey Kong Game in 1984??

I notice the final stage before it starts looping, stage 20, is "In The City", which could actually reasonably set the stage for DK'94 being considered a sequel instead of an expanded remake.

Hot damn I need to update the site.

How'd you come across this anyway?

Holy shit this is so exciting!

Yeah shit, for all we know they kept making Mario & DK arcade spinoffs for home PC well through the 80s.

Certainly deserves more research.

Wonder if I can track down a manual for DK3R somewhere...

So, quick rundown of the levels:
  1. On the Highway
  2. On the Strange Bridge
  3. On the Country Road
  4. The Aliens
  5. The U.F.O.
  6. Leaving the Earth
  7. In the Astrow Belt
  8. Around the Saturn
  9. A Mysterious Planet
  10. On the Desert
  11. By the Pyramid
  12. In the Cave
  13. At the Volcano
  14. In the Active Crater
  15. At the Dome
  16. On the Ground Picture
  17. At the Runway
  18. A Mushroom Cloud
  19. At the Sunset
  20. In The City

There's some trippy stuff in there.

Levels 1 through 9 seem to take place in a sequence. And I suppose one could make an argument that 10 through 15 follow on on the new mysterious planet. Due to the quality of thebackground art in the PC-6601 version, it's a little hard to make out what's going on, but it sort of looks like that's Saturn looming over the horizon in the backdrop of The City.

Strange alien landscapes, indeed.

So, according to the nindb blog, in 1984 Hudson Soft would "would run competitions for bedroom coders to send them their games and they would publish armfuls of them. In 1984 alone they published no less than 55 on home computers."

Fairly interesting stuff. So it looks like this is something like an officially licensed fangame, since Hudson had the license? I wonder if that's where Punch Ball and Mario Bros Special came from as well...

Whatever the case, it was formally published by a license holder, so that's good enough for me smile.gif

I'm not even sure there was a storyline, such as it was. The box art is re-used from the arcade art, and I've yet to be able to track down any sort of manual.

But hey, extrapolating story out of scraps (eh lads?) is what we do best here at DKVine! tongue.gif

Nice to see Stanley broadening his horizons, getting out of the greenhouse and, you know, travelling the stars and such.

I like the little parachute animation for when DK drops in, it's a nice little touch. I also like the concept that DK needs a chute in each hand to keep him in the air haha!

If Foreman Spike were to return to the Mario series and, like Daisy, appear in every sports and party spin-off games, woud they all be ADKU? Or would he then lose his connection like Mario did? Also am I using ADKU right (Arcade Donkey Kong Universe)?

I usually abbreviate is EAE (The Expanded Arcade Era), which includes follow-ups to the Arcade Era Mario stuff, like Mario Clash.

I'm not sure how things would fall if, for instance, Spike came back and became another on the semi-permanent roster of sports game seat-fillers. I cover and include Super Mario Kart and Mario Tennis, so I'd probably include them up to a point. I suppose that after a decent number I'd either need to be more discerning, or just have a rather expansive list of cameo games.

It's actually somewhat interesting just how much of Foreman Spike they've comported into Waluigi. I wonder if it was coincidental at first or if it was a planned thing. Given them using Jr and Daisy and the babies in Mario Tennis, I wonder if they had originally wanted to bring Spike in as Wario's doubles partner, but ended up making a new character for whatever reason...

Oh cool!

Yeah Nintendo does that a lot. The arcade games are also present in the Animal Crossing series (phone auto-corrected that to Animal Corsairs after a typo, heh) as things to put in your house.

I'm sure they pop up in similar capacity in other games as well.

Neat though.

I've played more and found that you can actually 'own' the Donkey Kong Game & Watch too! Sadly, it does not become playable. I took it down to the pawn shop and screen captured it along with its description. A small interesting fact is that it explicitly says that the playable character is Mario, which rules out the "Jumpman isn't Mario" theory! Not that I ever subscribed to it.

BIG BIG NEWS!

Nintendo has just announced a new title:

MINI-MARIO & FRIENDS: AMIIBO CHALLANGE - PRESENT CAMPAIGN

https://www.nintendo.co.jp/wiiu/ap5j/chara/index.html

In a strange twist of fate, the series has finally decided to apparently ditch the "real world" aspects and nominally star the minis.

I'll be providing coverage as the next stage of evolution of the Mario vs. Donkey Kong series.

Exciting times!

Sad that we're losing Pauline, apparently, but this does mark the Arcade Era debut of Diddy Kong!

The tree house and Yoshi of course debuted back in Yoshi's Island DS.

Also the debut of new Arcade Era character Spec!

Yoshi was actually introduced to the Expanded Arcade Era via the Game & Watch Galleries, now that I think on it.

But as for Yoshi's Island DS, I often waffle back and forth on it's inclusion in the ADKU (as you put it). The main thing comes down to Baby Donkey Kong. Baby DK ostencibly replaces Junior in the canon, but has a very DKCish design, and is shown to hail from the treehouse from DKC. The non-mechanical snap-jaws are also a puzzler. While their name and ai patterns obviously make them throwbacks to DK Jr, the fact that they're crocodilians instead of living bear traps is seemingly a throw forward to the Kremlings.

It's an edge case admittedly, and one that I could go either way on, depending on how I feel on a given day.

More or less. I mean, they're the same character, but the Baby DK restyle showed up around the same time that they phased out the use of "Junior" as he was depicted in the older games, so I'd say "replaces" is accurate.

And then Baby DK made his second and last appearance in 2008. He hasn't been seen again since while all of DK Jr.'s signature games have been re-released on the VC even though DK Jr. himself hasn't appeared in anything new. Seems like they're both gone for good.

Those Snapjaws in YIDS always make me feel happy. Callbacks.

So, is Spec a new character who mini-Spec is a mini version of? Is Spec in the game? I'm really looking forward to trying out this game and seeing how it's presented. It also immediately made me want the DK and Diddy amiibos.

If it follows the pattern of the last couple games, there will be some barely animated scenes scattered throughout the game progression that feature the actual characters, so we'll see if "Spec" is a real person or not.

But yeah, game's got me excited. Looks better than the last one smile.gif
