Yes, those are gibbons. Which brings the known apes on DK Island to...

Gorillas
Generic Monkeys
Baboons
Orangutans
Gibbons

Of course, there's more (why name a location Chimp Caverns or Chimpanzee Clouds if there were no chimps on the island?), but these are the ones we've seen.

Unless this is just a crazy drug trip by Donkey Kong, and then there's no telling.

I'm definitely going with the drug trip theory. I think the parasailing one is a giant, red wig. My god, I think I'm going to have to buy this game due to it's pure insanity. I think Nintendo's officially lost it.

I have to admit, the gibbon character design actually looks pretty good. Take away everything else in this game and set them next to a Rare Kong and I think they'd fit in pretty well. The backgrounds look decidedly less crap too, texture wise, although it doesn't look as though they're going to be any less crap, context wise:

user posted image

Also, and I don't want to get my hopes up here, but it looks like they may have done away with the unneccessary giant DK in the corner, as well as the green snot trail that used to follow him everywhere. Could just be wishful thinking though.

Donkey Kong Jungle Beat isn't bad. Look, what are the people saying who played it? The most people loved it. I think you are a Rareware fanatism that can't accept that they are an exclusive Xbox developer. DKJB is a good idea, the controls are much better then in the previous DK games!

Ten bucks says that all the people who are gushing over the game either hate the old DK games or don't care about them. Once again I cite Planet Gamecube's E3 impressions of the game, both of which called the game RE-PET-IT-IVE! Love that word.

Really, how in hell am I supposed to enjoy this "fantastic gameplay" everybody's gushing about if every other part of the game makes me want to throw up? I can't do it. You've got to draw me into the game first before I can appreciate the gameplay keeping me there, and Jungle Beat hasn't done that. Oh, and there's that whole part with it completely ignoring everything DK that came before it, something even Konga (well, Konga 2) dared not to do. If you're gonna have the franchise, why the hell aren't you using it?

EDIT: And how the hell have I not accepted Rare's being an official Xbox developer? Hellooo, last I checked, I have an Xbox sitting right across the room from me. Rare's not the issue here and never was.

I've never said it won't be fun. It probably will be, so long as you squint real hard as you play it. Fun or not, this game's visual design is an utter disaster. The wild absract characters and backgrounds just don't fit Donkey Kong. He looks completely out of place in this game. Like I've said before, it's almost as if they were already making Yoshi's Story 2, then at some point in development some Nintendo higher up said, "Hey, let's use the Konga Bongos in this game!" And the developers said, "Sure, great! Oh, but I guess this means we have to make Donkey Kong the main character, huh? No problem!"

PLOP!

Exactly. It reminds me of the Star Wars prequel fans calling out the Star Wars Original Trilogy fans for not liking Episodes 1 and 2. Same scenario, pretty much.

A lot of the backgrounds do look good in the new screenshot batch, but the characters are RIDICULOUS. This is the crazy-ass cracker shit you'd see in the Mushroom Kingdom, and then some. The craziest you ever got in Donkey Kong before this was a cat with nine tails and a giant barrel.

QUOTE

Well Mr. Miyamoto (come on, we know that's really you), I'm not sure which dissapointments (plural) you're talking about. Donkey Kong 64 was, yes, but what other ones? The entire DKC trilogy was platforming perfection, and the DKLs were the best platformers for the original Game Boy. Diddy Kong Racing was aces. What else? DKC GBC? It was a good game, but you'd be a fool to expect a perfect port of DKC. DKC GBA and DKC2 GBA? Hardely dissapointments. I can only see one missed swing during Rare's entire DK tenure, and even that was pretty fun the first time through.

I actually agree. They have the right look to be an ape in this world, unlike if you were to put Ukikis in this game. In fact, the gibbons are the only thing I'm impressed with (besides a few cool backgrounds) out of this entire mess.

I thoght about Crabbed by the Ghoulies, the new boss in DKC2, Starfox Adventures and some other games.

More than 50 employees left Rare in the time after getting a part of the MGS! In the two year before this change also many people!

First off, Kerozene is badass. You're the first person I've ever seen who's complained about him.

Secondly, what the HELL does Rare undergoing staff shiftings have to do with the quality of the DK franchise?! All your examples happened AFTER the DKCs and DK64, if you notice. Oh, and using GbtG and SFA as examples of Rare sucking on this board is... not a very smart idea...

Especially when you're using an avatar FROM Star Fox Adventures. Oh my.

Yeah, Ghoulies is adored on this board, as is SFA by the majority (read: everyone but Behonkiss). It's not that we're blinded by Rare. After all, most of us have issues with DK64 and Banjo-Tooie. Both SFA and GBTG got a bad rap by the critics and Nintendo loyalists. In fact, most people we've convinced to try SFA (in the Star Fox Adventures Appreciation Thread) ended up loving it.

And yes, Kerozene is wicked awesome. How can you even complain about him?

I personally can't wait for this game. These screenshots make me laugh more than they make me angry. I think it's because, unlike most of you, I really don't care what happens to the DK series any more. I'll love when new awesome games come out, as they should, but the shit games aren't any skin off my nose. This one looks beyond shitty, like it's entered some zen state of apeshit insanity, and I can't wait to find out how truly nonsensical it is. The only thing I pity is that Nintendo isn't making it crazy intentionally. They think this is the direction DK should take.

There's enough quality games out there that this small island of (very very funny) shit isn't going to hurt me. I'll play it for the same reason I saw Torque and You Got Served.

Oh, and that Chicken Plant Monster thing looks like it's got legs instead of roots. Weird. Pretty sky, though.

The bubble-in-the-nose is pretty much the definition of exported Japanese art.

Hmmรขโ‚ฌยฆ maybe the lateness of night has intoxicated me, but I'm actually beginning to go with the flow of these very disturbing character designs. These abberations are pretty much the perfect enemy, because they are manifestations of PURE EVIL. They're like Wario World versions of Metroid Prime's bosses (MP2 for the DK doppelganger.) Matter of fact, that's the vibe I get from the entire environment. It says "there is twisted, mighty and dreamlike devilry at work in the jungle. Could it be a threat that will swallow the DKU in its wake?"
