SUBMIT!!!

As you can probably tell by the immediate topic pinning, this is a pretty important post. Well, as part of a general sprucing up, we're trying to relaunch the old DK Vine main site in advance of E3. Ever since this place was resurrected following Green Porn City (ask your parents) with the New Staff, the main site has fallen by the wayside. As a result, there are dozens of games for which we have absolutely no content. This has been gnawing at the back of my mind for years.

Unfortunately, Hyle and I don't have much time to devote to content creation these days, and there's only so many Mazzeis to go around. But we're still here to function as creative directors/editors, and our perpetual Lighthouse Keeper Mark is finally getting a bit of company.

So that's where you all come in. We've mandated that you use proper grammar and display at least basic intelligence to participate in the forums; as it turns out, these are the perfect basic prerequisites for writing for DKVine.com proper.

I think this "Submit!" system I worked out is pretty solid, but please ask any questions you like right here, and let me know if there are any technical issues that you can forsee.

As part of this system, the Games Page has been completely overhauled with three ways to sift through the enormous backlog. Any game that pops up a "No Sneaking" screen... well, that's where we need your help. For the full process of writing, go to the Submit main page.

And please, do NOT be afraid of getting shot down or thinking that your work's not good enough. I still cringe when I look back at some of our older content. But one of the things I'm excited about is serving as an editor and having a dialogue with the content creators so your work gets better over time.

And just to reiterate what's on the page, everybody who contributes will receive full credit via either their username or their full name, along with a link to their profile here (or if you prefer, your external site).

There are a ton of games that first need general blurbs written (a few humorously descriptive paragraphs about the game, along with a link to an as-high-as-possible-resolution logo so we can create the main hub. From there, the sub-sections for the games cam be written. And we fully plan to keep an eye out for people who develop an affinity for this; pitching original Features and even promotion to the News section of the site is definitely not out of the question.

I'll field your questions here... but if you have none, let's start declaring content!

Besides helping update with the content that the Forum members hopefully decide to provide us with, I'd like to contribute as many Game Summaries as possible.

For now, the first three I'd like to do Game Summaries for are It's Mr. Pants, Conker Live & Reloaded, and Viva Pinata.

What if two different people submit two entries about the same game? Will you just choose which one you like best or somehow implement both into the same article?

It's on a first-come-first-serve basis. Whoever declares ownership of it in the forum here gets it assigned in their name on the Tracker. We won't accept any submissions that haven't been officially declared here, specifically to avoid that kind of situation.

If they can't finish it by the due date we assign, it's freed up for the next person.

I'd totally be up for this. I just have a few questions:

1- I can provide provide screenshots with funny captions, but can I also do funny Photoshops?

2- Do the reviews HAVE to be written, or can it be a video review? I can do both, but I have some ideas for a Donkey Kong Country Video Review.

3- If you accept video reviews, Would I make a private youtube link and send it to you? Or should I send you the file to upload to the DKU Youtube channel (or make a new channel called DKUtube?) Just a thought.

All in all, it's a great idea and I'd totally be willing to contribute.

I had guessed this would be a thing wherein you'd submit things to show up on the main site. As a joke I was gonna say...

"Review of DKCR"

"It's pretty good, you should play it."

As a not joke I'll probably pass, I feel I've done enough for Donkey Kong wiki pages by writing the Giant Bomb Wiki's Donkey Kong page which I am very proud of. I also think my Extra Life Balloon page is great.

If I were to devote myself to writing wiki type pages I'd do it there, and I'm really not in the mood anyway.

Grunt:

1 - Yes, absolutely! If you have an article that you think would benefit from some Photoshoppery, by all means include it! Unfortunately, a screenshots page isn't really the right spot for Photoshoppery, but if there's somewhere else you can put it in, we vehemently encourage it.

2 - I would definitely accept a video review, but there is one caveat - you would have to provide us with the video content and let us upload it to the site's YouTube channel ourselves... that not only allows us to add a DK Vine intro/outro, but it avoids complications if someone decides to take down their video and we're left with a broken link. Not saying you would do it, but we just have to be prepared for that in general.

3 - I guess you could either upload your relatively uncompressed (pre-YouTube compression anyway) video to a site like megaupload, then send that link to the DKVine.Submit@gmail.com address. I think that would probably be the best way to go about it. H.264 or DV avi with some form of 44.1KHz audio compression would be preferred.

I like the idea of having more video content. That's something Jeremy blazed the trail with in his Bitching About Brawl series, but there's no reason we can't expand it to reviews. Just as long as (much as I enjoy those videos) it's not your green communist hand puppet giving the review.

MasterDS:
Pity, that. With our site you could not only write biographical material, but swear profusely and make obscure film references at the same time! If you ever want to get involved, you know where we are.

Video Reviews seem key to getting sentiments out into the wild, I'd suggest you do them, especially since video is kind of your specialty. Different sort of video I suppose. I'd suggest even just doing video features where two of you sit down and play some DKC and discuss why you love it. Think of it like a Let's play except with multiple people and perhaps not going on for longer than it needs to to explain why how we feel about the game in question. (Here, watch one Giant Bomb's Quick Looks (warning: this one is 51 minutes long, here's a short one if you're short on time) to see what I mean exactly.) Such content is high in quality but low in production values and should what you should be looking at.

Additionally I seriously suggest otherwise looking at Red Letter Media for a direction to go in terms of reviews. Long, passionate, funny, and insightful. That's the model you should look at there. Course this content would be high production values but could get a lot more attention provided the points were well put. Also choose the best and worst games to review this way.

Well I must only find shit ones when I look for them (Well, generally I want to see the story of a game I won't play, so it's actually preferable that there's no talking. Still.), but yeah then, Let's Plays with multiple people. Except I'd recommend not making it 100% of every DKU game, just enough to get the good bits across.

Don't worry, I had no intention of doing it that way. However, I did have an idea to do some "Story Time" versions of some DKU games. Basically telling the story of the game (humorously, of course) in animated story book form. Something like "The DKU Story Time." Obviously I won't add any of my characters, and I'll send you the files in the format of your choice. I have some ideas for a Donkey Kong Country "story time" video, so with your permission I'd like to work on that.

Quick question:

When it comes to pitching a Feature article, are you looking for prospective writers to prove themselves first with content on the game sections, or can we immediately make that jump?

Wow, the Donkey Kong Racing blurb is still so depressing.

I have absolutely no idea how well it'll turn out or what exactly I'd write about within, but I could try handling Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing with Banjo-Kazooie's section. I've played the game thoroughly, I don't imagine contributing to that section is in highest demand, and I know where to find several image resources for the sub-pages already.

I'd like people to submit a few game page pieces of content. That can be character biographies, screenshots w/ captions, main game page summaries... we'll just use that as a proving ground for a little while before expanding into the Features section.

Depending on when it's due, I'd be interested in taking on a summary of DKC 2 GBA- it holds a special place in my DKU heart.

Or alternately, a review- either one works.

The previously written DKC GBA article has Screenshot/Movie Analysis in addition to general info. Should I do something similar with DKC3 GBA, or would only a few simple paragraphs (describing how it's different in comparison to the original, etc.) be suffice?

I could definitely do the former if necessary; I'm just curious.

Those will all be separate things you'll sign up for once you finish with the main page. So right now all you're slotted for is the main page couple-of-descriptive-paragraphs, then we can get you started on the other things to fill it out.

Right Lawyer, we actually need the main page summary/logo first before content can appear. So I'll have you do that first, then you can write up your review and that will be the first content posted in the DKC2 GBA hub. And I'm just spitballing here, but idea for a future article there might be comparisons between DKC2 SNES and GBA's map screens... or maybe more general. Up to you, really.

This is a pretty wild idea, actually. It's like a Wiki but with actual CONTENT CONTROL...
It's the morning over here in Britland which means I probably have an unfair advantage in this whole first-come-first-served thing... I'd hate to preempt anybody who had their heart set on a particular game's section, but at the same time I feel obliged to do the exact opposite of what Katzii's doing and not think about it for a single moment!
That being the case, I'd quite like to do something for Diddy Kong Racing DS? The summary page or something, get the ball (or wheel?) rolling, I dunno.

The ego-boost that comes with having your ramblings published here is nigh-on irresistible! And I found the whole "don't be afraid of being shit" spiel inspirationally inspirational...

P.S. That Pocket Tales Big Brother picture made me spit coke all over my keyboard, stop drawing attention to me, McCanna! Did I say coke? I meant semen.

I've got Waddle and Dustin added to the Tracker. Man, this is turning out great! Make sure to read the notes and send everything to the email address listed in the Submit section.

And Waddle - I was worried about that pic, as I had to remote in to my home computer with its fancy Photoshop from work to create it. There's a small delay on the mouse movements and the color depth is shit... it's like making images with boxing gloves on. I'm glad it got the reaction I had hoped for.

I'll do the "Game Summary" for Mario Super Sluggers just to start off with something easy that nobody cares about or will ever read, and from there I'll move on to possibly some more interesting games.

Quick note (though I'm sure you're already aware), some games on the list take you to a 404 error, and some of them go to a page on the old site's design (the really old one).

All right! Two of our first submissions have gone live!

Jomingo's Mario Super Sluggers main page and Waddle Dedede's DKR DS main page are available for your perusal.

We'll update the main page with these pages when all Memorial Day deadlines come rolling in... I've changed your two articles to "Done" in the Tracker. Feel free to sign up for more! Either develop the sections you created with Screenshots pages or whatever, or maybe try for a new section.

Oh, and it bears mentioning: Notice on the Diddy Kong Racing DS page how you can click the logo for a higher-res version. To anyone submitting these, if you can track down a high-res logo (black background or not) please include it with your submission. I'd like the site to eventually be a game art repository on top of a functioning info source.

Rawk, Nuts & Bolts is yours. I may not have a chance to update the Tracker for a few hours, but consider it delegated.

Valentina, unfortunately Mark has already laid claim to Viva Pinata's main page. The good news is that there are like twenty more Viva Piņata games for the picking. But I won't be able to reserve anything for you. That kind of invalidates the due dates we have in place.

Really, all we need is a couple paragraphs and for you to track down a (preferably high-res) logo for the game. It shouldn't take more than a half hour, tops. Whenever you feel comfortable with being able to do something like that with a deadline of 4 days or so, just check the Tracker to make sure nobody is already working on it, then let us know here.

I hope you're able to find the time for it... I think it's cool seeing our forum-goers maintain a presence on the site proper.

Ahh, look at that! I'm officially a contributer (for perhaps the first time in my entire life)! Thanks for the ego-boost Chad!
Anyhow, while I'm inclined to agree with Jomingo that the priority ought to be brushing off as many main games pages as possible (no matter how low our collective opinion of the games in question) before adding stuff to them, I'm a bit rubbish: I'm lacking (I now realise, looking at the DKU game list) in, well, 90% of the stuff from the 2000s. Haven't played Mario Golf Toadstool Tour or Mario Parties 4 through 400 or Mario Crown Green Bowling or Mario Masturbates On Dying Orphans' Faces DS, it's lamentable honestly.

So... can I have a go at Mario Kart DS (seeing as how my Diddy Kong Racing DS blurb describes it as "basically shit" and all)?
I'd add more to DKRDS (wouldn't mind doing so, actually) but there's certain things about the canon/fanon-status of that game I need to confirm with the Elders Of The DKU...

Excellent - and Waddle, I hope you don't mind another ego-boost, but I used you as a guinea pig for the new user field: Submissions!

We're not going to maintain these... that'll be up to you guys. So if you like, whenever something you contribute goes live, please edit your profile and add the URLs!

Unfortunately, I had to consolidate Wii, DS, and X-Box gamer codes. I used DKR DS as the Nintendo DS field, and Brawl as the Wii field. You'll have to fill in the rest if you want the list to be comprehensive again. Hopefully you submitted your codes to the Online ID thread so they should be relatively easy to track down... if you even care to worry about it.

EDIT: And Highway has been brought into the fold with his DKC3 GBA page. Very nice.

I definetely want to conntribute, but right now I don't have that much time. So no claims from me right now.

There are a ton of games that first need general blurbs written (a few humorously descriptive paragraphs about the game, along with a link to an as-high-as-possible-resolution logo so we can create the main hub.)

I recently found this high-res logo from DKC. It's from some guy on Deviant Art, maybe someone can ask him or her if it's okay to use it.

Also, I'm impressed how many members already contributed to the main site. Keep up the good work, everybody.

I'm a big fan of the way this is being done. The attentive moderation of every submission prevents the uninspired entries from getting through, which I've noticed is usually a HUGE problem for sites that rely on user-created content.

I think I'll do Star Fox Adventures next.

Ah sorry, there was a problem with the link in the Star Fox Adventures page. It's been restored.

Anything else you'd like to take on?
