We must free our souls of the evil of Fire Mouse by burning the demons that plague it. Now that you're pure, we shall allow you passage into this edition of Letters....
Congrats, all! The new site design is fantastic - I've never seen anything better. It's so much easier to read the text, and overall navigate (I'm glad you tossed away the banner-sized buttons). How long did the top banner take you to do (?) - my God, it'd probably take me ages. The dates are correct now, you've added a chat, and a news page; GREAT!
Although, I don't know how you are going to handle the updates. Since Aussie lives on the other side of the world, will he have to update according to a specific time in the US?
Lastly I have a suggestion. Is it possible to make "botz" for the Chat Room, to make it seem like someone is always in there? Also, I would think that if you brought the Chat section its own section, it would gain popularity (I mean, if I was a new visitor, I probably wouldn't find chat, what with it being shoved in a subsidary page).
Don't take my suggestions too seriously, though; you've done a great job!
-SirNick
Ben: Thanks for the kind words, SirNick - I know that Chad and Slush were working really hard right up to the first to make the new layout perfect, and I think it's turned out much better than we all expected. I don't think anyone's had any bad words about it. As for the top banner, well, Chad's quite the renderer, isn't he? Those graphics were all done by him. I tell you, if I was rendering, It'd take me a couple of millenia, that's for sure.
As you may (or may not) have noticed with the updates, they're still going (as much as possible) on the regular schedule. This is because Chad and Slush update around 4pm in the afternoon, but are behind one day for me. So it works out nicely.
As for the Chat (which seems to be working great, aside from the occasional sook it decides to have, resulting in everyone being kicked off simultaneously), I'm sure Chad will be able to help you out in that department.
Chad: Every few hours, the server kicks off for a split second, sending all the chatters on dialup modems hurtling out the room. It's a minor inconvenience, really, and so far it hasn't even effected broadband users.
I was in the last edition of Scribes. Used some pretty British or
not-so-British lingo.
You know, I'm starting to get more annoyed by you guys every day. Not only
are you INCREDIBLY biased game-wise(DK64 didn't meet our expectations.
Admit it.), but after sending an artwork that I spent about 45 min. on, I
got a message back from Chad saying something quite insulting I won't
repeat. I don't care if you Mr. Mooney me or Pikachu picture me or even
forget about this whole letter, it felt good to let off some steam abput
Chad. Sorry.
Anyway, about the BT connection. My Scribes letter was the one that got the
"sack" response, so I think that we won't hear anything from Rare for a
while. We're left spectulating Stop N' Swop, controller paks, and the
possibility that there's no longer any connection. Even though, I sort of
consider both games to be one big game. BT stars off two years later, with
all the moves previously learned(makes sense). You can see one part of the
orgiinal lair(who knows what else we'll see?). but you concentrate more on
exploring previously inacessible areas in the Isle O' Hags(Explain how
that's on DK Island.)So, I sort of consider it to be one big game still.
Later, and sorry Chad.
-Behonkiss
Slush: Whoa nellie. Don't be bringing your feud with Chad over to my section of the Letters page. I'd rather not speak for him, and I'm sure you wouldn't want that either. So I'll just go on to discuss some of your other thing-os.
Chad: C'mon, don't get mad. That particular artwork just wasn't very creative. Your other ones may not be the best looking things in the world, but so far every single one of 'em has made me laugh. We have to have SOME standards. Otherwise we'd just be RareNet.
Slush: Incredibly biased nature? Yeah, you're right. However, DK64 did meet our expecations for a 3-D platformer. It wasn't a Donkey Kong Country-like game, and for that reason, many people consider it a disappointment. Also, you'll notice that we don't give blowjobs to every game (Chad didn't care for Mario Tennis, and he's not afraid to admit it). I guess it's just in the eye of the beholder.
Us explaining how the Isle O' Hags is on DK Island? Yeah, I know it's sarcasm, but give us a break. The Banjo-Tooie connection is still in. Trust us. If it isn't, I'll get that tattoo of Gary Coleman on my head, and post pictures on the site. However, we'd venture to guess that the Expansion Pak may play some role in it. Not that it does (or doesn't), but it just might. We probably won't find out until Rare decides to reveal how to actually go back to Banjo-Kazooie, or we could try to find out right now by asking Jimmie Walker...
"DYN-O-MITE!"
Well, Jimmie Walker sure didn't give us a clear answer, did he? Who out there can? Tune in next time for "What's the Deal With That Connection?"
Dear Chad:
I know I should be posting this on my own site, but, what ever happened to Brentilda in Banjo-Tooie? Why are there 4 sisters, most of which are witches (pun accidental 'is that a word?'). Did Rare realize this before they stuck her picture in Pawno's shop?
That's all I got.
-BaronKrusha
Chad: I'm sure Brentilda is still holed up in Gruntilda's Lair, only the rocks block off potential visits in Banjo-Tooie. I suppose the entire family has an interest in the Black Arts, which justifies Mingy and Blobby being witches. I'm also sure that Brentilda's picture in Pawno's shop was just a minor easter egg (as was the Gruntilda doll from Furnace Fun on the shelf behind Pawno).
Hi Slush, I am Ana C., I love the Kongs very much and I'm from Brazil. So I have three questions:
1. How old was DK when he won a tie?
2. Why Chunky, in DK64, opens his mouth lots of times?
3. Who are Scaver, Olmec, Krosshairs, Mini-Kar, Nippy, Minecart Demon and Micro Buffer?
Ask me and I'll know who are them from now on
-isacteruya@ldnet.com.br
1. Nobody really knows when DK got his tie. When he was "Donkey Kong Junior" he didn't have it, and we guess he was about three years old at that time. He was probably around 25 when he first appeared as the DK we know today (with the tie). So maybe he got it when he was in his early twenties, or teenage years. Who knows?
2. Chunky's obviously not the smartest Kong, so it may be a sign of his intelligence (or lack thereof) that he continues to open his mouth like a slow-witted person would for no reason. Of course, this isn't meant to offend anyone out there with the tendency to widen your jaws for whatever reason whenever you wouldn't normally have a use for your mouth.
3. The team at Rare who made Donkey Kong 64 didn't name many of the characters (which is very much unlike them). To keep them straight on the site, we had to give them names ourselves. They're by no means official, but they're good enough for the time being.
Scaver is the beetle you race a couple of times in the game, Olmec is the giant totem pole fellow in the middle of Angry Aztec, Krosshairs is the entity that says "get out" and aims the target at you, Mini-Kar is the small toy car you race as Tiny, the Minecart Demon is the demon that plagues you on the minecart ride, and Micro Buffer is the microphone at the end of the game (named after real boxing and wrestling announcer, and all around dingus Michael Buffer).
Chad,
My kids are huge DK64 fans. I have two plush
animals (both Donkey Kong... in two different
sizes). I am looking for plush toys to complete
my compliment of the DK Crew. I was told on
a Nintendo chat board that they are available
on Nintendo Power, but I cannot locate them
there. The animals I have were purchased at
a discount (perhaps close-out) store and are
officially licensed to Bensussen, Deutsch,
and Associates... so I know they are real. I
was hoping you might be able to tell me where
I might locate the rest of the crew. Thanks.
-Bill Lohman
Chad: I've seen the original Donkey plushes at Blockbuster Video in the bargain bin, but the only place you can get the DK64 ones (with the rather crap plastic heads) is through Nintendo Power Magazine's subscriber catalogue. You can also try to call them at 1-800-255-3700, though I'm not sure if you need a subscription ID to place catalogue orders. And if that fails, check eBay.
hey you know you can kiss my *** you freak i will have you kicked off line
for good . you are the ***** of the world you know and if you have a problem
with me kiss my ***
-Ness554@aol.com
Slush: Yes, I'm sure you will get me kicked offline for good. Bacon served on cold is Iced Tea, my friend. Think about it.
I'm back again, blah blah blah, yadda yadda yadda. In response to your
response to my last letter, I do have an SNES, however, I sadly don't have
any of the DKC games. I've been trying to find AT LEAST DKC(it's my
favourite out of all three, even though Kiddy isn't in it),but to no avail.
Also, I forgot to mention that I do have Banjo-Kazooie(WITH:Box, manual,
game, and all 3 files completed, sans Mumbo Tokens. Ah, the joys of being
the only person in your household who knows how to use an N64 controller
properly.)
Anyway, onto da beef of the letter. And I said beef. Hahaha!
1)Speaking of boxes, ever since B-K, I've been saving the boxes and manuals
for all my games. Currently, the only two games that have gotten this
treatment are Donkey Kong 64 and Kirby 64.(Although,since this will most
likely be posted after Christmas, that will mostly likely change.)
2)In response to that guy who wrote about doing a new DKC cartoon-YOU STOLE
MY IDEA!! Not that I'm doing the Donkey Kong 64:The Series anymore. After a
too-short first episode, I scrapped it. I DO say, however, that we can get a
nice big DKU comic book-you know, by DC or Marvel or somebody. Just don't
give it to Archie Comics-they screwed Sonic the Hedgehog up already.
3)I know I'm kinda going out on a limb here, but what's your favourite
world in Banjo-Kazooie? Out of simple curiousity(sp?). Mine happens to be
the neglected-has-far-has-I-know Bubblegloop Swamp(I SWEAR, that place has
to have SOMETHING to do with the secrets somehow. I just know it!) with
Treasure Trove Cove a close second.
Chomper:Hey, did you know that Snacker's actually my second cousin once
removed?
I TOLD YOU, get outta here!
4)One final note-I'm thinking of drawing a nice big poster for my room, of
the Kong family(plus Wrinky-san has a ghost...wait, did I just talk
Japanese?)posing with Mac Tonight, AKA The MOONMAN. Speaking of whom, I also
happen to have one of the special little Hot Wheels racing cars with the
MOONMAN's mug on them. You know, the blue car. #94, with ads for Macdonalds,
Reese's Peanut Butter Cups, NASCAR and Coca Cola all over it. Anyway, I'd
scan in the pic and send it to you, but unfortunatley, I have no scanner to
speak of. None. Zip. Nada. Oh, woe is me.
Well, till next time, BA-KAW!
-Sean King: I AM. CANADIAN. (Really, I am!)
P.S. No, Chad. It's not "bourn". It's born for both America and the British
and their spin-off countries(Canada, Australia, etc.)
Chad: I had all three files complete, until something formatted my cartridge in mid-1999 and I lost everything. Now I just have the first ans second files done. And you should be proud - Slush still can't hold an N64 controller properly.
1. I've got about four cubic feet of closet space filled with game boxes. I can use the cardboard to fuel fires when I become a hobo. A good long-term investment.
2. Personally, I'd just as soon rather the DKU series stays games-specific. We've seen a TV show, a direct-to-video movie, and a card game, all of which were total ruubbish. The games, though, are always high quality. Why is that?
3. Oof, that's a tough one. I'm torn between Click Clock Wood and Freezeezy Peak, but I'll go ahead and say the former, due to the fact that it was not only fun, but very innovative.
4. Wrinkly-san? I had no idea Wrinkly was a respected Japanese man. You learn something new every day...
P.S. I've never used "bourn" before. In fact, I've stopped using British spelling altogether to appease the intent-on-complaining Slush. What are you going on about, anyway?
Dear Slush,
Are you guys at the DK Vine ever ridiculed for being DK fans? Do
people ever tease you for liking something that others consider kiddy and
stupid? I'd just like to know how you deal with these situations, that is,
if you want to tell. It upsets me that just because these games are clean
that they are attacked by "the upper class." Thank you for your time.
Sincerely,
-?????? ????

Slush: Actually, I keep my "DK obsession" to a very reasonable level. I buy all the games and work on the site, and that's about it. So no, I never get ridiculed. I think Chad's more obsessed than I am, so it may be better to ask him. However, because so many people don't understand the Donkey Kong series and do think it's kiddy is one of the reasons we created this site. We wanted to a place for DK fans to actually go and know that they're not alone out there. The games can actually be quite filthy at times, and not just in the Conker's BFD way of presenting it straight forward. I think the humor in Banjo-Tooie is definitely not geared towards children....
P.S. Good Lord, that's a lot of links!
Dear Chad,
How old do you think Banjo is? Is he a teenager, a young adult,
middle aged? Also, where do you think Banjo and Diddy keep their
car/hovercraft/plane from Diddy Kong Racing? They don't seem to have
garages. Thank you for donating part of your precious time in viewing this
pointless collection of scrambled letters.
Sincerely,
-The little guy with the ugly face (?????? ????)
Chad: I'd say Banjo is in his late teens / early twenties. He might have been one of those kids who hits puberty late, as his voice was significantly deeper in Banjo-Tooie. And I don't think the vehicles in DKR belonged to the actual racers. Taj's Island is reknowned for its race tracks, and I'm sure they're kept on the island. The character weights are what altered their control.
Subj: I Bet you didn't know this.
In Conker's Pocket Tales, if you leave off the controls for a while, Conker
will sit and a mystical tune from a familiar Rare game will play.
-KAVM3@aol.com
Slush: I bet you didn't know that we did know that.
Wait a minute...you own Conker's Pocket Tales? I thought that Chad and I were the only two! Holy mudda f--ka, there are actually three copies of CPT sold! This is unbelievable! Here, you deserve this Mr. Mooney Award (of excellence) for buying CPT. It's a great game, you know! Ye-us!
Did u know that in worldmap diplomatic style ~ SM Aussi land is the Third best place to start.
-Hugh MacDougall
Ben: Why....thank you....Erm...It's a good thing you told me that. No, really. I would have been lost without that vital information. *cough*
Heya all
I'm a big fan of the music by Dave Wise but he unfortunately didn't do
only solo works (afaik only Monster Max, DKLand 1, DKC2, Diddy Kong
Racing and the upcoming Dinosaur Planet, are there any more?) but also
DKC 1&3 (together with Fischer and Beanland). Now the hard questions:
Which songs in both games are by Wise, which are by Fischer and which
are by Beanland? Really hope that you are able to help or at least to
point out where I can get the info (I already contacted Rare...).
-Datschge
Chad: I'm not sure who did Jet Force's music (it sounded a bit like Wise's style), but whoever it was is also doing the Conker's Bad Fur Day music. Anybody know who did JFG? And I think the games in which two artists works on were more of a collaborative effort on both musicians' parts. I don't think they divided the game in two, as it would result in an inconsistent overall feel to the game.
how do you get artwork cliped
-KKpicke
Slush: HEY CHAD, WHAT THE F-CK IS HE TALKING ABOUT? TELL ME SO I CAN REPLY TO HIM!
Chad: I... don't... know....
How can you possibly say that the Wario Brothers work for Hitler? I read your filthy article, and you know what I think of it....BULLSH-T!!! I saw those pictures where they were supposedly "saluting their leader", yeah well I didn't see one arm across the chest and the other STRAIGHT in the air. Their arms were bent and to the side of them. As for the sign on Waluigis' hat, it doesn't make a complete swastica.
They didn't speak German in those games, your hearing things. If you wanna try to make someone look bad, why not Mario and Luigi. Plumbers who can shoot fireballs. Sounds like demons from hell to me. And why does Mario always say "Here WE go!!"?? Does he hear voices in his head or something? You just wrote that article to make people hate Wario and Waluigi! Your just jealous cause they've gained so much popularity in such short time, and its taken Mario and Luigi longer. In closing, F-CK YOU!!!
-MATRIX
Chad: *sigh* And then there are the people that don't know how to laugh... Must be spending too much time running from Agent Smith.
In your continuing quest to scrape the bottom of the barrel... In Rarewhere's B-T info page, the last words are as follows: "And for now, at
least, we hope that we can consider your Banjo cravings fully sated..."
Well, it's something...
-ANTSegaGenesis@aol.com
Slush: I believe that was there months before the game was released.
|
cosidering how much rare changes things, this is probably berri. In B-T, the
Ice Key safe contains a Mega-Glowbo, which can be given to the Pine Grove
Humba Wumba to permanently turn Kazooie into a Dragon, which replaces Peck
with Breath Fire. And please ignore the insanity and bad grammer in my past
few letters, i was WAAAY to high on PD, Majora's Mask, and B-T. Not to
forget sugar......
-The Soulwraith
When you open the ice safe you said it's emty well thats wrong the mega glowblo is in there. Take it to wumba in Pine grove and she will turn Kazooie into a DRAGON.
-emyogs@adelphia.net
Chad: Really. I had no idea.
|
In Banjo-Tooie I have no idea on how to get in the factory area of grunty industries!!! I have looked all around and I cannot find out how to get in the factory. Please tell me how!
-gridiron55@hotmail.com
Chad: Hmm..... how to give it away without giving it away.... Ah, yes. You know, there's a reason Chuffy's tracks can be found in Quagmire...
I found this site with a guy ranting and raving about the proof of the secret something in DKC2.
His strange but true proof is:
1:the blackboard in the kong college has numbers on it that form a magic square,pi and the golden mean.
2:Wrinkly says all but 1 of her lessons are usefull.
3:Cranky never tells you you've beaten the game.
4:Stronghold Showdown isn't much of a showdown.
5:You heard this allready and you know K.Rool somehow sometimes sits on the Co-Pilot seat. This guy says K.Rool started to drive.
6:The treasure map backround has an X on it apparrently on Stronghold Showdown.
And the address of the site is http://www.fortunecity.com/meltingpot/gipsy/670/DonkeyKong.html check it out and give the verdict A) The guy is completly insane B) He might be right C) You just don't care.
-export@ant.eastlink.ca
Chad: Yes, this guy wrote to us several times in the beginning of dkvine. We debunked it, in saying that the chair in the Krock is rendered along with the background and isn't an active object, therefore it can't be sat in. So my verdict is "A". Some people never learn.
Hey Chad, I found something weird in DKR. Well, actually, I knew it for quite
awhile. But I forgot it until now. Here it is, step by step:
1. In Diddy Kong Racing, go to the cheat entry.
2. Enter 'Jukebox'.
3. Go to the auto options.
4. Go to the music test and select Track 12.
Strange, huh? I never heard it anywhere else in the game itself. Maybe you
should make an MP3 of this Mystery Tune for people who don't own DKR or an
N64 or morons who are to lazy to do the above steps. I leave you now to
wonder about this weird song, the Mystery Tune.
-NES Boy
PS: In the Banjo Bio, why did you say that Banjo didn't win the races?
Chad: Yes, I've heard that track. It was on the Diddy Kong Racing CD as "The Secret Tune". My guess is that it's either beta, or was a level removed at the last minute. In any case, because you asked so nicely, here's an MP3 file of Diddy Kong Racing's Secret Tune.
P.S. Because Diddy won.
I noticed that you had not put this on any of the
features about the BK/BT Connection Crisis. It may
seem trivial, but I thought I'd bring it up anyway. In
the pawn shop in Jolly Roger's Lagoon in BT, there is
a Banjo-Kazooie box with a picture of Grunty's good
sister behind it. I've tried bill drilling it to
death, but nothing happened. It has the old game's
logo on it, could this have something to do with the
connection? Maybe you have to pay Pawno to show you
how to enter the old game, and you can enter the box
to go back in time to the old game. Maybe I've been
thinking about this too much. Maybe I should've gone
to sleep last night instead of constantly bill
drilling it... oh well...
-squirtlesaur2000@yahoo.com
Chad: We do have a (slightly outdated) feature on the connection, buried deep within the Banjo-Tooie section. If you consider "blatantly obvious link on the main page" deeply hidden.
Chad: I really don't know what to make of this. When it showed up in my inbox, I had to download the Korean Text Display to even read it, and I still don't understand a word. Any Korean speakers want to e-mail me a translation?
cool new design!
really my congratulations !
what do you think about the Gameboy Color Advance ? DO U think that RARE will design a new DKC 2 D Jump n' Run on it ?
and please...
open THE GUESTBOOK !!
-expand-charly@gmx.ch
Chad: Thanks for the compliment thing. I'm sure Rare will release at least one SNES port on the Game Boy Advance, and if not, they we all need to get down on our knees and beg for an original Kong sidescroller on the handheld. C'mon, Rare, be a pal!
First, excellent site.
Second, where does Kangaroo fit into to this?
Recall that ca. 1980 (before the first came called "Donkey Kong", there
was a game called kangaroo. The basic story of this game: Donkey Kong
kidnapped the kangaroo's baby. The mother kangaroo takes on Donkey
Kong to save the baby kangaroo.
The first game called Donkey Kong was the sequel to the one called -
Kangaroo.
Thanks for taking the time...
Hmm
-expand-charly@gmx.ch
Chad: Ah.... no. Miyamoto was originally going to make Donkey Kong a Popeye game (with Bluto as Donkey, Olive Oil as the Princess, and Jumpman as Popeye) but the license fell through, so he created Donkey Kong. Other than that, there is no more backhistory to it, and certainly has nothing to do with kangaroos. Give your information source a hearty ass-forkin'.
