Banjo-Geek's Sonic & Sega All-Stars Racing With Banjo-Kazooie Review

Graphics
Sega's been doing games for about 2 decades, and one thing they've done well is making beautiful graphics. This game is no exception to that. They (and by "They," the reviewer means Sumo Digital, the developers of the game. -Ed) really set the mood for the stage, ranging from happy-go-lucky to dank, dark and grimey. I REALLY like them! It shows that they put some effort into this game. You'll go "Hey, is that Banjo's fur?", or "Wow! Amigo's hat has so much detail!". So, to sum up the graphics: they aren't just eye candy, they're an eye candy store!

Sound
Like Super Smash Bros Brawl, Sega All Stars takes pieces of music from previous games. I'm not that big on the chosen pieces. They can be fun and memorable, or completely forgotten the moment the song stops (especially the House of the Dead tracks). The only one that I'll remember the rest of my life is Samba de Janerio. Sega pretty much got songs from a lot of the more recent releases and remakes instead of 'That One Song You Loved When You Were 6', but the tunes fit the stage and scenery nicely.

Play Control
Many people will bitch and moan the first time playing this game. "Neeerrr, why can't i turrrn? I hate drrifting,". It's called PLAY FOR A WHILE. Sega All Stars's controls WILL feel funny at first. Eventually, you'll adjust to the controls after a couple races and go "Say, these controls are great!". Turning and drifting are really good and they feel like your really turning a vehicle. However, bikes are also in the game. Like in Mario Kart Wii, they can do wheelies for a speed boost. Unlike in said game, the wheelies are GOD AWFUL to pull off. I believe you're supposed to go 'UP DOWN UP DOWN'....ON THE LEFT ANALOG STICK. To add to the frustration, it goes off whenever it wants. sometimes you need to do that combo a couple of times to work. While not the best control in a game, they can do a driving test with a passing grade.

Originality
Back in the 90's, Sega made Sonic to compete with Mario. Everyone knows that story. They did their own thing to side scroling that didn't take too much from the plumber. With this game, they're competing with Mario Kart Wii AND Smash Bros. They do it in a fashion that has traits from both games, but not in a "TEACHER, HE'S COPYING ME!!" kind of way. This game instead takes little peeks from the other tests, but adds their own things to it. Yes, they pretty much reskinned the Red Shell, Green Shell, Banana Peel, and Mushroom, but the All Star moves can make anyone forgive the other items. How many times have you led a congo line, or go in an air baloon and drop bombs at opponents, or jump onto a giant egg out of no where in the middle of a race? That's what I thought...

Final Word
This game can be classified with having She's All That syndrome. Sure, it looks unappealing and ugly now, but once you actually get to know it and clean it up, it can be a really fun thing be with. Sega All Stars needs to be actually played to be judged. I'm sure everyone at the DKU groaned and moaned wildly when this was going to be a DKU game. Personally, I say it's a worthy addition. While not on par with Bad Fur Day, Banjo-Kazooie, or many of the other DKU games, this one is still a hoverboat-load of fun! Online multiplayer and Time Trials will be making you itch just to get first place with the fastest time. Many people will say that Sonic the Hedgehog has been on life support this decade. Well, this new decade promises some hope in the fan base devoted to the blue blur.
